Computer Science Movies #3: Hackers

Hackers follows a group of teenage computer prodigies in the mid-1990s who get caught up in a high-stakes corporate conspiracy. The story centers on Dade Murphy, a young hacker once known as "Zero Cool," who was banned from using computers after crashing over a thousand systems at the age of 11. Now a high schooler in New York City, Dade adopts the alias "Crash Override" and quickly falls in with an underground group of fellow hackers: Acid Burn (played by Angelina Jolie), Cereal Killer, Lord Nikon, and Phantom Phreak.

When one of them accidentally uncovers part of a scheme involving a computer virus designed to capsize oil tankers, the group finds themselves targeted by the authorities and a corrupt corporate security officer known as The Plague. As the stakes rise, they must use their skills to clear their names and expose the real villain behind the cybercrime.

Despite mixed reviews at release, Hackers has become a beloved cult film over time, especially admired for its retro take on digital rebellion and youth culture at the dawn of the internet age.
