OLTP vs OLAP

Modern organizations use different types of data systems depending on whether they need to process daily operations or analyze business information. OLAP systems are built for analyzing large volumes of historical data. Instead of handling many small transactions, they focus on complex queries, aggregations, and reporting tasks that help organizations discover trends and support decision-making.

OLAP platforms often use denormalized schemas such as star and snowflake models, along with columnar storage and optimized query engines. These features allow them to scan and process billions of records efficiently.

Examples of OLAP products include Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Databricks SQL, and ClickHouse. They are widely used for business intelligence, financial analysis, customer insights, forecasting, and machine learning workloads.


How They Work Together


In modern data architectures, OLTP and OLAP systems typically operate together to support both real-time operations and advanced analytics. OLTP databases capture and manage transactional business events as they occur, and this data is then transferred to OLAP platforms for analysis, enabling valuable insights without impacting the performance and reliability of transactional workloads.
